Torah Text (Bechukotai — Aliyah 1 of 7)

Read the biblical text and try to understand it on your own, before reading the commentary.

ג אִם בְּחֻקֹּתַי תֵּלֵכוּ וְאֶת מִצְוֹתַי תִּשְׁמְרוּ וַעֲשִׂיתֶם אֹתָם׃
3 Im bechukotai telekhu ve'et mitzvotai tishmeru va'asitem otam
4 Venatati gishmeikhem be'itam venatenah ha'aretz yevulah ve'etz hasadeh yiten piryo
5 Vehisig lakhem dayish et batzir uvatzir yasig et zara va'akhaltem lachmekhem lasova vishavtem lavetach be'artzekhem

The aliyah opens with three words that define everything that follows: “Im bechukotai telekhu” (verse 3). Not “if you observe,” not “if you keep,” but “if you walk.” Walking is continuous movement. The statutes are not merely kept, they become a way of life.

The double condition. “Ve’et mitzvotai tishmeru va’asitem otam” (verse 3). Guarding and doing. Rashi explains: “that you toil in Torah.” It is not enough to know, you must labor. The toil in study is the first condition, and fulfilling in practice is the second.

Rain in its season. “Venatati gishmeikhem be’itam” (verse 4). Not just rain, but rain at the right time. At night, when people are in their homes, so it does not disturb. The blessing is not only in quantity but in timing. Rain that falls in the wrong season can cause more harm than drought.

Continuous abundance. “Vehisig lakhem dayish et batzir uvatzir yasig et zara” (verse 5). The threshing will last until the grape harvest, and the grape harvest will continue until the sowing. No interruption. The produce is so plentiful that there is not enough time to finish threshing before the next harvest arrives. An unbroken chain of blessing.

Satiation and security. “Va’akhaltem lachmekhem lasova vishavtem lavetach be’artzekhem” (verse 5). Two things that do not always go together: satiation and security. One can eat to fullness yet fear tomorrow. One can dwell in safety yet go hungry. Here both are promised together. The complete blessing is when the body is satisfied and the soul is at peace.
